Jeff Cochrane wrote, "Gary had a sudden heart attack on Sunday morning 7-8-2001 at his home on the west side of Charlotte while getting dressed to go to church. He had suffered from heart problems for some time. We grew up in the same neighborhood and kept in touch. I had just heard from him about 3 weeks before his death."
